The Second Week of NaNoWriMo

November 10th, 2009

And things are crumbling left and right. The hubby got me sick; thanks Josh, I love you too! The Art Of the Carolinas is this weekend and with normal work plus just trying to get everything ready for the big show is taking it’s toll. I’m exhausted, and now I’ll be working through the weekend, with early mornings and even later nights than usual, and on top of that I’ll be be writing as soon as I walk in the door at home – I hope. I’m planning to keep my note book with me at the booth so that I can write when we aren’t swamped, but we’ll see how that goes. I have a very bad feeling that I will be running between the conference hotel and the studio more than I’d like to. ><.

In other news, I’ve made it into a noveling group, which I’m very excited about. It’s a brand new group starting up, so I hope everything works out with it. If not, I’ll take it upon myself to start one of my own. :)

The basic idea is that you have a small group of 6 to 8 people max. Everyone meets a set number of times a month to critique each others work. Sounds like a regular writing group, right? Well, that’s where the similarities end. We as a group focus on our novels; we critique 50 to 100 pages at a time of a person’s work and when someone feels that a piece is ready for the market we read the entire work, front to back so to speak, and critique the work as a whole. Members have to be very serious about joining and participating. First off, you have to apply to the group by submitting a 5 page sample of your writing. This insures that you are on the same level as the other writers in the group.  Meetings are mandatory, only family emergencies and serious illness will cancel a meeting. That’s right, cancel a meeting. It’s an all or nothing type of deal. You also have to critique each others work, you just can’t skip something if you don’t ‘feel like it’. Deadlines are decided months in advance so everyone knows when they’re turn is coming up, and who they will be reading each meeting.
